Sympathy Blues - Beate's WSC36

I needed to make a sympathy card for my friend early this week and turned to Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge for a layout idea. While on her blog, I hit the link to Laurie Schmidlin's card here: http://justgivemestamps.typepad.com/...race-life.html. I fell in love with Laurie's card. So, I used it for inspiration on mine. I ended up turning my card on it's side rather than sticking with Beate's exact sketch. You get the idea though!
Stamp sets: garden silhouettes, warmest regards
Inks: not quite navy, chocolate chip
Cardstock: not quite navy, chocolate chip, whisper white, notebook designer series paper
Embellishments: hodgepodge hardware brads, chocolate chip wide grosgrain ribbon

1st Birthday Invitation Page

When Seth turned 1 year old, just over 2 years ago now, I sent out handmade invitations (the card on the left side of the page) to his party. I also created a photo montage featuring a picture of him from each month of his first year. Of course, I had to scrap them so I could preserve them. The only product from Stampin' Up! was an incentive stamp used at the top of the invitation, a chocolate chip marker, and a stamp from day-to-day flexible phrases. At the time I did this page, I didn't have that many of our products yet.

Word Window Flower

I made this card for my upline's ImPeckable Stampers group swap using a set from the upcoming Occasions Mini 2008 catalog (available March 1st). Wait until you see this mini! It has so many awesome new stamp sets & products. I'm going to have a hard time limiting my purchases!

Since I'm a sucker for stamp sets with words/phrases, I chose to do a card with the Phrases for a Friend set. I just love the different sizes and styles of letters in the phrases. They just beg to be inked in different colors with our markers.

Even though it was more time consuming, I created the flower using the word window punch rather than the scallop circle punch because I wanted the flower to be a little more 3-D and the petals to be a little more defined. It's also a good way to show my customers that our punches have a ton of uses.

I apologize for the yellowish tint in the photo...I took this photo tonight and the artificial light is not the best.

Stamp sets: phrases for a friend, so swirly
Inks: regal rose, old olive
Cardstock: regal rose, old olive, so saffron, whisper white
Embellishments: always artichoke grosgrain ribbon, eastern elegance rub-ons, white gel pen
Tools: word window punch, circle punches, paper piercer, sponges

Playground Pals

I snuck in some additional stamping time yesterday afternoon and was able to put together this 2-page layout. The bright colors in the photos were perfect with our Bali Breeze designer paper.
These photos were taken in October 2006. We were getting ready to head out the door to the pumpkin patch when we got word that Brian's dad had collapsed. Brian jumped in the car for the nearly 2 hour drive to our home town, where he learned that his dad had died instantly while shopping with our brother-in-law and nephew for materials to fix his roof. After Brian left, I decided to take the kids to the local park for a distraction. For a change, they called a truce to their usual sibling rivalry and became playground pals for a few hours. I think Grandpa Bobby would have been proud! I got some great photos and shared some quality time with my kids but it was such a bittersweet day.
Stamp sets: doodle alphabet, sweet celebrations, think happy thoughts, be happy
Inks: rose red, taken with teal, pumpkin pie, only orange
Cardstock: taken with teal, rose red, old olive pumpkin pie (textured), whisper white, bali breeze designer series paper
Punches: my way, circle punches
Embellishments: clear button, natural hemp twine

Rockin' Buds

My neighbor (and good friend) Mary made this card for Seth for his birthday. I just love how she put a brad in the center of each body segment. The colors are awesome too.

Mary is like a 2nd mom to Seth. When he was a baby, she used to call and ask if she could come over and rock him to sleep at night.....they spent quite a few nights in our rocking recliner together. Too cute! Here's a photo of the two of them snuggling on Mary's patio glider/swing in June of 2005. Unfortunately, I don't think I ever snapped a photo of them together in the recliner.

Friendly Elephant

In lieu of a Christmas card, my upline Julie sent this card to me for the New Year. She wanted to send a card using one of our new stamp sets and one that I could display long after Christmas had passed. Since I put it on my display board almost immediately, I neglected to get a photo and share it with all of you. Finally got around to getting it out and taking a photo today.

I think this card is so sweet. The going gray is perfect for the elephant and not a color I think about using often. The amazing thing about Julie is that she is able to make the simplest cards look so polished. I'm really envious of this as it's not something I've been able to master! And that's not all, Julie is an awesome upline.....she has taught me so much and really made me strive to be a better demonstrator. Thanks for being so great, Julie! You, too, are an unforgettable friend!

Correction: Julie let me know that the card base is actually Sahara Sand, not Going Gray. Funny how it can look so different depending on the colors you use it with! My camera sure makes it seem gray as well.

Stamp sets: happy heart day
Inks: going gray, regal rose, certainly celery
Cardstock: going gray, regal rose, whisper white, certainly celery designer series paper
Embellishments: regal rose wide grosgrain ribbon

Summer Sun-Flower

Seth took a nap today so I finally got a chance to stamp for the first time in several days. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. Finally decided I wanted to try a unique fold card (this one is double folded at the bottom and I will flip the bottom down to sign the card). I was also determined to use summer sun, a color I seem to rarely pull out. For the stamping, I wanted to use my new Lots of Thoughts Sell-a-Bration stamp set as well as an old favorite, Doodle This (surely you haven't forgotten this beautiful stamp set already!)

I used a black marker to make the stitch lines. I stamped the flower from Doodle this twice in black ink....once on summer sun cardstock and once on whisper white cardstock. I then cut both flowers out and colored in the one on white cardstock with a summer sun marker. I curled up the edges of the flowers to give them a little dimension. I really love how the yellow pops against the white and black.

Stamp sets: lots of thoughts, doodle this
Inks: summer sun, basic black
Cardstock: summer sun, basic black, whisper white
Punches: 1-3/8" circle, designer label, word window
Embellishments: basic black grosgrain ribbon, black brads

Deere Party

Since we just had Seth's 3rd birthday party today, I obviously haven't had the time yet to scrapbook the photos. In fact, I'll be lucky to get them done in the next couple of months. But I felt the need to post some party pages, so here are the ones from Seth's party last year. At that time, he was obsessed with tractors so it was John Deere all the way. The card in the lower right corner is the actual invitation that I sent out to our guests.
Stamp sets: by land, all year cheer
Inks: garden green, yoyo yellow, basic black
Cardstock: garden green, yoyo yellow, glossy white
Embellishments: basic black grosgrain ribbon, black & yellow brads; rub-ons (non-Stampin! Up!)

My Baby is 3 Today!

As of 10:42 pm tonight, Seth is 3 years old. Hard to believe my little one is no longer a baby. We had friends over tonight for cake and ice cream and then we gave him our gifts. We're having a Diego party for him tomorrow morning as it's his new obsession. Seth actually fell asleep tonight wearing his new compass watch and holding a pair of binoculars!

Thought I'd share the scrapbook pages I did to document his birth. These were the very first scrapbook pages I did when I started scrapbooking nearly 2-1/2 years ago. It's almost painful to come back to them as there's so much I'd like to change. But that's part of the process....over the years, my style is bound to change, I'll get better at putting layouts together, and new products will come out. So, I'll resist making any changes and just enjoy the pages and the memories! The first 3 pages feature the 2-page spread. The last photo is a 3rd matching page I created to showcase photos of Seth with his sister and each of his grandparents. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the stamp set I used to stamp the animals for this page.

Seth's birth stats:

Seth Alexander
Born Feb. 22, 2005 at 10:42 pm
9 lbs, 15 oz.
21.5 inches long

Stamp sets: whimiscal alphabet upper, tall tales alphabet, unknown
Inks: brocade blue, really rust
Cardstock: really rust, brocade blue, whisper white, vellum; patterned paper (non-Stampin' Up!)
Embellishments: brads (non-Stampin' Up!)

I'm a Featured Artist!

Lindsay Sasseville was sweet enough to tag me as her Featured Artist today! How cool is that?!!! I am really touched that she liked my cards so much. The funny thing is that I just discovered Lindsay's blog a couple of days ago and immediately subscribed because I love her work. Amazing that she found me about the same time through one of my photo uploads to SplitCoast.

I'd like to give Lindsay a shout out as well. Here's her amazing 2-page scrapbook layout that I fell in love with (you can bet I'll be casing this for my own scrapbook!):

Hot Summer Days, Long Summer Naps

Another 12x12 layout to share with you. I did this one last weekend. I must admit, it's not my favorite layout, but I'm still pretty happy with it. For some reason, I struggled putting this one together. Don't you just hate that?! Scrapbooking is supposed to be fun, not work!

This was Seth's 1st jaunt in a swimming pool. He was pretty lackluster about the whole thing. At only 5 months of age, I guess it's hard to get fired up about anything. After all, you're still trying to figure out everything about life and wondering how long before your next bottle! All the fresh air and water must have worn him out though. He fell asleep in my arms almost as soon as he got out of the water and he took a long nap in the grass on the beach towel (in the shade of course).

This was also the first year the Mia started swimming well. Doesn't she look so cute in her bikini?!!

Stamp sets: alphadots
Inks: only orange, tempting turqouise, brilliant blue
Cardstock: only orange, tempting turquoise, orchid opulence, whisper white
Tools: my way punch, circle punch
Embellishments: chipboard alphabet (non-Stampin' Up!)

Scenes From Willowood Inn

These photos were taken at the place where we stayed a couple of years ago while on vacation. I had a bunch of miscellanous pictures of us hanging out around the motel and wanted to scrap them. I love the photo of Mia. She had written all of our names on a doodle board. It was a neat way to document who came on our trip.
Note: I made these pages awhile back and the sets are old, so hopefully I'm listing their names correctly.
Stamp sets: petal prints, pure & simple alphabet, newsprint alphabet
Inks: cranberry crisp, handsome hunter
Cardstock: cranberry crisp, handsome hunter, very vanilla
Embellishments: twill tape, hodgepodge hardware

Just a Little Case

I've been busy making card fronts for an upcoming swap with my upline's group, so I'm posting a photo of a 3x3 card I did last year. My upline had challenged us to case something from the catalog so I just changed the colors on this card using the Priceless set.

Stamp set: priceless
Inks: tempting turquoise, real red, pixie pink
Cardstock: tempting turquoise, real red, pixie pink, whisper white, basic black
Tools: scallop circle punch, round tab punch

A Few New Techniques

Today I wanted to challenge myself, so I tried a few new techniques:

1) Sewing: I've been wanting to try this for a long time but just never gave it a whirl. It was actually easier than I had imagined, though I need to adjust the tension on my sewing machine so the stitching looks a little nicer. Still, I was pretty impressed that my lines were fairly straight.

2) Versamarker Embossing: Though it's hard to tell in the photo, the large flowers on the white cardstock are clear embossed. I colored them in bayou blue ink using my blender pen. Then I colored over them with a versamarker. After applying clear embossing powder, I heat set them.

3) Kickstand Card: These are such fun cards. I tend to stick with the standard sizes and I love how just a slight variation can mix it up.

This card was inspired by Jody Morrow's use of stitching and the colors basic gray/bayou blue together on this card - http://confessionsofaribbonaddict.blogspot.com/2008/01/kind-thoughts.html. Her card is absolutely fabulous!

Stamp sets: spring solitude
Inks: bayou blue, basic gray
Cardstock: bayou blue, basic gray, whisper white
Embellishments: whisper white grosgrain ribbon, bayou blue double stitched ribbon; gray thread (non-Stampin' Up!)
Tools: word window punch, Janome sewing machine (non-Stampin' Up!)

Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge #35

I've been wanting to try one of Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenges for quite awhile and finally got around to it. I chose Sketch Challenge #35 (http://beate.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/2008/02/15/weekend-sketch-challenge-35/).
These challenges are great because part of the guesswork is taken out of the design, enabling you to put together a card in a shorter amount of time (ok, this is theoretical I know....sometimes you can still spend too much time using a template!).
I'm sending this card to my sister-in-law, whose paternal grandfather just passed away. Hope it brings a little bit of brightness to an otherwise dark time.
Stamp set: close as a memory, watercolor joy wheel
Inks: rose red, bravo burgandy, old olive
Cardstock: rose red, bravo burgandy, old olive, very vanilla
Embellishments: bravo burgandy wide grosgrain ribbon, hodgepodge hardware

Punchy Baby Card

While designing my onesie cards (see previous post), I realized that there were some cute punched pieces left over after punching the leg holes on the onesie. I just couldn't let these go to waste, especially since they'd already been stamped on with the polka dot background stamp. So, I whipped up a quick 3x3 baby card. Simply adhere the pieces to a 3x3 white cardstock base. Stamp the greeting below. Tie silver cord through a clear button and adhere. Viola! So cute and so quick.
{Note: these were punched from some pretty in pink and bashful blue onesie cards I'd made previously}
Stamp sets: nursery necessities
Inks: bashful blue, whisper white
Cardstock: bashful blue, pretty in pink, whisper white
Embellishments: silver cord, clear button

1st Snow 12x12 Page

I made this 2-page spread last week on our holiday off. Unfortunately it's the only layout I got done as I spent the remainder of the day doing swaps and projects to demo and make at my stamp club. Anyway, I just love how this turned out and the colors are so pretty together. For once, my kids were wearing clothes that we suitable to the theme of the scrapbook page and my pictures were really crisp. It seems rare that both of those happen in the same instance!

These photos were taken in February of 2006 during Seth's first real jaunt out into the snow. He was 1 year old. Seth was a little annoyed with the snowflakes that kept falling into his eyes (thus, the squinty look). We pulled him in the sled for a bit and he still wasn't sure about this snow thing. Then finally, he tried to crawl out of the sled, which caused cold snow to get into his gloves and then he was done with the whole thing. He started to cry (no photos pictured) and we took him inside.

I cut the letters out of vellum cardstock on a Cricut machine and then stamped snowflakes on them with whisper white ink. Talk about a neat look....it turned out better than I expected. The medallion on the lower right side of the right page is a combination of layers from stamps in the So Many Scallops, Sweet Celebrations, and Short & Sweet stamp sets.

Stamp sets: all through the year, full calendar, short & sweet, so many scallops, snow wheel, sweet celebrations
Inks: whisper white, versamark, elegant eggplant, tempting turquoise, night of navy
Cardstock: whisper white, vellum, elegant eggplant, tempting turquoise, night of navy
Embellishments: white gel pen, night of navy/elegant eggplant/& tempting turquoise grosgrain ribbon, tempting turquoise brad; snowflake brads (non-Stampin' Up!)
Tools: circle punches, photo corner punch, scallop circle punch

Sweet Onesie Cards

If you've been to SplitCoastStampers lately, you've surely seen the onesie cards that people are designing based on Lauren Meader's tutorial at http://laurenm.blogs.splitcoaststampers.com/2008/02/05/create-your-own-onesie-card-tutorial-and-important-note-please-read/. Are her cards not the cutest?!!!

Here's my version. I originally did these in pretty in pink and bashful blue to demo (and swap) at my upline's meeting this past week. Everyone went ga-ga over them (pun intended!). Unfortunately I gave them all away and failed to get a picture of them. So, I did a couple more yesterday and decided that I'm not crazy about pastels for babies. These are done in ballet blue and pink passion and they really pop. I added a scallop to the sleeves of the pink onesie using our small corner rounder on a strip of white cardstock. The size of the scallop is a little different but I think it still works. Instead of using my large star punch on the star, I actually cut it out by hand. It needed a small white border around it in order to stand out from the body of the onesie.
Stamp sets: nursery necessities, polka dots
Inks: pink passion, ballet blue, basic black
Cardstock: pink passion, ballet blue, whisper white
Embellishments: basic black brad, silver eyelets
Tools: 1-3/8" circle punch, scallop circle punch, coluzzle, crop-a-dile

Another Always Card

Can you tell that Always is my new favorite stamp set?!! I love it because it's so versatile. I made this card for my friend Jeannie. She is really involved with the local Audubon chapter, so the bird was perfect for her.
Stamp sets: always, hugs & wishes, it's your birthday
Inks: purely pomegranate, rose red, black stazOn, versamark
Cardstock: soft sky, basic black, whisper white, purely pomegranate
Embellishments: black gingham ribbon, black embossing powder

February Stamp Club Projects

I had my double stamp club meeting this past Tuesday and besides the Valentine's card I posted yesterday, we did the following projects:

2,4,6,8 Acetate Box
Template by Susie McCormick

You can get the template for this clear sided box at: http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=277399. The box is pretty easy to make but it took my club members a fair amount of time to complete even though I had all the cardstock pre-scored for them. The center of the box is made with a transparency. I used dark chocolate Kissables candy {yum!} inside and let the colors of the candy dictate the colors of my box. Otherwise, I never would have put ruby red, perfect plum, and chocolate chip on the same project. I just love the colors....who would have thought to put them together! I also demo'd this project at my upline's meeting this past week and it was a hit with my fellow demonstrators.

Stamp sets: always
Inks: ruby red
Cardstock: ruby red, perfect plum, chocolate chip, whisper white
Embellishments: chocolate chip wide grosgrain ribbon, whisper white grosgrain ribbon, pewter jumbo eyelet
Tools: 1-1/4" and 1-3/8" circle punches, crop-a-dile
Other: transparency

3x6 Baby Card or 6x6 Baby Brag Book Page

My club members scrapbook in different sizes, so it's hard to put together scrapbook projects. I decided to try something new and gave my club members the option of making a 3x6 card or a 6x6 brag book page. They also had the option of making a boy or girl version.

You'll probably recognize this design. I posted a 5x5 card with a similar design earlier this month.

Stamp sets: so many scallops, starstruck
Inks: versamark, pink passion, tempting turquoise
Cardstock: pink passion, tempting turquoise, green galore (textured), only orange (textured), whisper white
Embellishments: tempting turquoise grosgrain ribbon
Tools: scallop circle punch

AWOL and a Valentine

I know I've been AWOL for a quite a few days. Between prepping for demonstrations and club meetings, making swaps, and scrapbooking; I've been too busy stamping to post. {I think that's a good problem to have!} Hope to get all my recent projects posted tomorrow. I just wrapped up a double stamp club meeting last night and celebrated Heart Day with my family tonight.

In the meantime, here's a card I made for my dear hubby for Valentine's Day. I had my club do this project as well.

Stamp sets: always
Inks: soft sky, versamark, whisper white
Cardstock: soft sky, basic black, whisper white
Embellishments: basic black grosgrain ribbon, black embossing powder

Scrabble Birthday Card

My friend's mother asked me to make a card for her friend's birthday. The two ladies love to play Scrabble together, so she arranged the words "Happy Birthday Lynda" on a Scrabble board and took photos. She wanted me to incorporate the photo into an actual card. This is what I came up with. Sorry for the slight glare on the photo.
I started with a taken with teal card base and used my coluzzle to cut out an oval in the center. Since the Scrabble board in the photo made a fairly busy background, I decided not to do any stamping to the card base. I then tied the white grosgrain ribbon on the right side of the card through the cut-out. I placed adhesive around the back of the oval cut-out and centered the photo inside. Next, I added a piece of taken with teal cardstock on the inside of the card to hide the back side of the photo. I used Stampin' Up! brads in the center of some generic paper flowers and placed those in the lower left corner of the oval. Finally, I added a rub-on phrase from our Eastern Elegance rub-on pack in the lower right corner of the card.

Cardstock: taken with teal
Embellishments: whisper white grosgrain ribbon, eastern elegance rub-ons, barely banana & bashful blue brads; paper flowers (non-Stampin' Up!)

Whimsical Tip: As you start to cut out & use some of the rub-ons from our rub-on packs, you will inevitably isolate a phrase or shape from the main sheet. Keeping track of these isolated pieces then becomes an issue, especially since you need to keep the protective layer on top. My upline showed me a neat trick. Simply take the isolated rub-on and it's protective layer and staple the edge of them to the cardstock insert that comes in the rub-on pack. Then, store the cardstock insert in the original plastic packaging. Problem solved! Thanks for the tip, Julie! The photos shows an example with our white rub-ons. Sorry the rub-on phrase is a little difficult to make out against the white background.

Welcome 12x12

In less than 3 weeks, my baby will turn 3. Though I'm anxious for Seth to get a little more independent, I'm also sad that my little one is getting so big. I think these milestones are a little more bittersweet with him since he is my last baby. Here's a page I made to showcase his birth announcement. I had the photo birth announcements made online at Purple Stork (http://www.purplestork.com). They were so easy to work with and had great advice for taking and submitting your photos. I highly recommend them.

The birth announcement reads "Mia would like to introduce her new little brother" and then gives his name and birth stats. Click on the photo to see it enlarged.

Stamp sets: whimsical alphabet lower
Inks: stazOn black
Cardstock: real red, basic black
Embellishments: white narrow organdy ribbon; black stitched ribbon, red grosgrain ribbon, metal alphabet letters, metal embellishments, rub-ons, staples (non-Stampin Up)

Altered Gift Card Tin

My friend Janet gave me a gift card to Michael's for Christmas and she gave it to me in one of their gift card tins. I've been saving the tin ever since with the intent to alter it and regift it, likely with one of my Stampin' Up! gift certificates inside! I finally got around to altering it. What do you think?

I started with a piece of real red cardstock the size of the top of the gift tin lid. I used our large corner rounder to round the 4 corners (our small corner rounder was not the right curvature). I stamped the heart from Short & Sweet randomly on the bottom half of the cardstock in real red ink. I stamped the birthday cake image from Fun & Fast Notes on a piece of whisper white cardstock using basic black ink. I then trimmed the white cardstock somewhat close to the image. The corners of the white cardstock were rounded with the corner rounder. I used our markers to color in the image. I took a strip of brocade blue cardstock and rounded the 4 corners. I adhered the white & blue cardstock pieces to the real red cardstock using dimensionals to give them height. Then I tied whisper white grosgrain ribbon on one side of the card around and through the blue cardstock. {Don't ask me to tell you how I tied it as I would never be able to explain it so that you could understand it!} I adhered the entire piece to the top of the gift tin lid using sticky strip. Then, I attached red gingham ribbon to the side of the lid using sticky strip as well. Viola.

Stamp sets: fun & fast notes, short & sweet
Inks: real red, brocade blue, basic black
Cardstock: real red, brocade blue, whisper white
Embellishments: whisper white grograin ribbon, red gingham ribbon

Groovy Thinking of You

For this card, I was inspired by Kristina Werner's recent obsession with using groovy guava, close to cocoa, and chocolate chip (http://www.kwernerdesign.com/blog/). I'm sending this card to a few customers that I haven't heard from in awhile. Hi Lisa, Sandy, & Sharon! Seems like I don't get out my wheels that often for reasons unknown. As you can see, you can use them to make awesome patterned cardstock like the base of this card.

I started with a 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 inch card base in groovy guava. I inked up my So Swirly jumbo wheel with whisper white ink and used it to cover my card base. Be sure to set that aside and let it dry as our craft ink needs a little time to set. I then took a 2-1/2 x 4 inch piece of whisper white cardstock and stamped the flower from Priceless near the top of the card with groovy guava ink. I stamped the flower image again on the sticky end of a post-it-note and cut that out. Use this cut out piece as a mask by sticking it on the white cardstock over your stamped image. Now ink up the small flourish from Priceless in chocolate chip ink and stamp it on 2 sides of the flower image. The mask will keep the ink off of the flower image itself. Stamp the flower image again with guava ink on a scrap piece of white cardstock and cut out. Mount this flower on top of the existing flower image with a dimensional, turning the flower slightly to stagger the petals of the bottom and top flowers. Use a marker to color only the words on the "thinking of you" stamp from For a Friend. Huff on the stamp and stamp the greeting at the bottom of the white cardstock. Tie groovy guava double stitched grosgrain ribbon around the white cardstock between the flower image and the greeting. Trim the ends of the ribbon at an angle. Mount the white cardstock on a slightly larger piece of close to cocoa cardstock. Mount this on a piece of chocolate chip cardstock that is slightly larger still. Adhere the layered cardstock piece to the card base at an angle.

Stamp sets: priceless, so swirly, for a friend
Inks: whisper white, chocolate chip, groovy guava
Cardstock: groovy guava, close to cocoa, chocolate chip, whisper white
Embellishments: groovy guava double stitched grosgrain ribbon
